The Vosges are wooded rolling hills and mountains lying to the West of Colmar and running up towards Strasbourg. Camping holidays in the Vosges are a great way to enjoy the lovely scenery, the quaint mountain villages, and to follow the wine trails - Routes des Vins - and taste some of what the region has to offer. These trails are suitable for a car drive, or can be done by bicycle. If you prefer a more leisurely way to get around, the Walking Club of the Vosges has done a great job in preparing lots of well-marked trails. Some of these enable you to get up into the mountains where you can still find traces of the Maginot Line fortifications, built to protect the area from the possibility of German invasion.
The two principal towns at either end of the mountains are Colmar and Strasbourg. Colmar, a small town, is easily visited in a day, and rewards with its pretty buildings and flower-fringed river running through. Strasbourg is of course a major city, but most people visit the central old town, a medieval collection of narrow winding streets and overhanging buildings in the local style, alongside the banks of the rivers and canals. Petit France is the most attractive quarter, once the tanners' district, dotted with old tanneries and with little bridges criss-crossing the river.
For something completely different, visit the amazing folly, Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg right in the centre of the region. The original chateau, and several of its successors, were destroyed by fire, and the current chateau was an attempt to recreate the different styles. Apart from the spectacular architecture and stunning interiors, the views across Alsace-Lorraine to the distant Alps makes the trip worthwhile.
