The Italian lakes offer a fantastic location for a camping holiday. Whilst the weather should be warm and sunny, the heat is often tempered by a breeze from the mountains, whilst the lakes themselves present plenty of opportunities for cooling off in their waters. But perhaps what makes these lakes so special is the combination of spectacular scenery and the warm hospitality and excellent cuisine (at reasonable prices) so typical of Italy.
Lake Garda is the largest of the Italian lakes, and this is where you will find most of the campsites, so we have prepared a separate page for Lake Garda camping holidays.
The Lago d'Idro is a delightful smaller lake in the mountains above Lake Garda. The lake is forbidden to power boats so is excellent for sailing, swimming and windsurfing. To the east of the lake is the huge Parco DellAlto Garda Bresciano, where there are fantastic walks along marked trails. The Parco extends right to Lake Garda. As a result of its tranquil position Camping Rio Vantone is excellent for families and nature lovers.
Lago Maggiore is the western-most of the Italian lakes, to the North-West of Milan. The top quarter of the lake is actually in Switzerland, and Camping Valle Romantica is only 2 km from the Swiss border. The site enjoys a lakeside setting and shares a beach with another nearby site belonging to the same owner.
