On 6 June 1944, Caen was the theatre of the decisive battle of World War II. Three million soldiers engaged in the titanic conflict, with Allies landing at five Normandy beaches – code-named Sword, Utah, Gold, Omaha and Juno – and parachuting behind enemy lines. A year later the war was over, but the Allied bombings meant Caen had to rebuild itself almost entirely. In so doing it created the Memorial Museum, a commitment to peace, solidarity and defence of human rights. It is this message that Caen seeks to convey to the world today as a City of Peace. ©Michelin
