The DFDS fleet of modern ferries used to offer a comfortable and convenient way to cross the North Sea to Esbjerg in Denmark. There was a direct sailing from Harwich to Esbjerg, but no longer. Minimum check in is 1 hour 30 minutes. Pets are not accepted.
This was the only car ferry to Scandinavia. Esbjerg was a good starting point for any journey into Denmark and from there you can drive to Copenhagen and catch the car ferry to Oslo. The roads are excellent and well-signposted, and the driving is good. It's only an hour to the fabulous Legoland site, and about 3 hours' driving to Copenhagen, from where you can cross the Oresund Bridge direct to Sweden. From here you have the option of going east to Stockholm or north to Oslo in Norway.
Taking a cat or dog to Denmark?
Or you might want to stay awhile in Denmark. It's a very friendly country with quaint villages, lots of lakes and few crowds. Copenhagen is a great city with everything you would expect in a capital city. Make sure you visit the Tivoli Gardens, a real trip back in time and a spectacular midnight firework display. Not far from Esbjerg is the medieval city of Ribe with its attractive old buildings and winding streets. And of course Denmark is a great country for cycling, with cycle lanes everywhere and where the cyclist is king!
